My road to becoming a school librarian has been a long one. My love of reading began in childhood when I discovered The Babysitters Club books. I decided to become a history teacher and when I got my first job at Salisbury Middle School in Salisbury, MD, I met those most amazing media specialist. When I was in the media center I watched students come in and she knew all of them, could remember the books they liked and would recommend new ones. She spent her entire summer reading books so that she would be prepared for book recommendations. The other thing I loved about this media specialist was the amount of support she provided for teachers. I could go to her on a Monday and tell her that I was thinking of doing a research project on Ancient Rome with my students and within three days, she would have pulled all of the relevant sources from the shelves, found websites and offered to help me teach research skills. She was such an asset to the students and the teachers. She is the reason I want to be a school librarian. I want to help students find the book that will spark their interest in reading, much like The Babysitters Club books did for me. I want to help teachers support their curriculum and make their very busy school lives a bit easier.
